The airline was created in 1946 by an American and an Australian: Roy C Farrell and Sydney H de Kantzo.

Cathay Pacific and its partner airline, Dragonair, fly to most major and several minor cities in Asia.

Cathay Pacific has a well-developed Asian network and serves close to 170 destinations in 42 countries and territories on five continents.

In 2014, the average age of the fleet was 8 1/2 years which makes Cathay Pacific one of the youngest fleet in the skies with 146 wide-body aircraft. The airline is committed to operating a modern, fuel-efficient fleet. Cathay Pacific ordered 85 aircrafts for delivery up to 2024.
